For our Dutch visitors; Goede ideeën, sterke apparatuur en een fascinatie voor het verschijnsel van e-mail hebben AltaVista vanuit het onderzoekslaboratorium van DEC op het Internet gebracht. In het voorjaar van 1995 raakten drie DEC-medewerkers tijdens de lunch aan de praat over de nieuwe Alpha 8400-computer van Digital (ook wel de TurboLaser genoemd). Deze computer zou databasesoftware 100 keer sneller kunnen draaien dan concurrerende machines.
